About Avanti Range Repair
Owners are sometimes surprised that a 20- or 24-inch Avanti electric range needs the same 240-volt circuit as a full-size range. It is a compact freestanding unit with four coil or radiant surface elements and a small oven, controlled by infinite switches and a basic thermostat or electronic control, and it fills the gap in condos, accessory units and older kitchens where a 30-inch range will not fit.
Because so much sits in a small chassis, power problems ripple. A plug that has worked loose or a terminal connection that has burned at the back can take out the entire range at once, and heat from that bad connection can damage nearby wiring. Before suspecting the range, reset its breaker fully. If it was recently moved, check that the cord is pushed all the way in and the anti-tip bracket is engaged.
Single failures are more straightforward. One cold burner usually means a broken element or a burned receptacle or terminal. The oven most often loses its bake element. Ranges with electronic controls can be knocked out by a power surge, and in Tampa's summer thunderstorm season that is a realistic explanation for a range that worked yesterday and sat dead after a storm.
With power off, look at the coil elements and their receptacles for burn marks, and make sure the oven door shuts snugly. Do not use a burner or oven that smells of hot plastic. On the visit we start with supply voltage, then test each element, switch and the oven control, and examine the wiring and terminals at the back of the range, where a compact layout concentrates heat.
Elements, switches and receptacles are usually worth repairing. A failed control on an older compact Avanti range, especially one whose part is hard to source, can tip the decision toward replacement. When a compact range is the only size that fits, we check what is available in that width before recommending anything, so you do not end up with a gap in the cabinets.
Where Avanti Ranges Tend to Fail
- Loose plug or burned terminal connection killing the whole range
- Bake element burned out in the compact oven
- Burned receptacle or element leaving one surface unit cold
- Electronic control failed after a summer storm surge
