About Avanti Microwave Repair
A dead-quiet Avanti microwave, with no display, no light and no fan, has usually blown its internal fuse, and the fuse usually blew because a door interlock switch failed. Those switches open and close every time the door does, and in a busy break room or rental they wear quickly. Replacing the fuse without testing the switches only sets up the next failure, so we always check the whole door circuit.
The rest of the design is standard. Most Avanti microwaves are compact countertop models, with some over-the-range units, built around a magnetron fed by a high-voltage transformer, capacitor and diode, with a turntable and a set of interlock switches. Compact size and a modest price make them popular in apartments, dorms and offices, and they also make the repair decision a close one.
A microwave that runs and spins but leaves food cold points at the high-voltage side: magnetron, diode, capacitor or transformer. Sparks in the cavity usually come from a burned waveguide cover or something metallic left inside. A turntable that stops turning usually has a failed motor or a coupler that has slipped out of place. A cup of water heated for one minute is a fair owner test.
Beyond the outlet, the door latch and a look at the waveguide cover, leave it to a technician. Never remove the outer cabinet: the capacitor can hold a lethal charge long after the plug is pulled. We discharge it safely, then test the door switches, fuse, magnetron, diode and control, and tell you plainly when the repair cost is close to the price of a new unit.
Door switches, fuses and turntable motors are reasonable repairs. A failed magnetron or control on an inexpensive countertop Avanti usually favors replacement, while an over-the-range model, where a new unit means removal and installation, more often justifies the repair. Either way the recommendation comes with the price, and the choice stays with you.
Where Avanti Microwaves Tend to Fail
- Worn door interlock switch blowing the internal fuse
- Magnetron or high-voltage diode failed, food stays cold
- Burned waveguide cover causing sparks in the cavity
- Turntable motor failed or coupler out of place
