In the condo towers of downtown, Harbour Island and the Channel District, the over-the-range microwave usually doubles as the cooktop vent and often recirculates through a charcoal filter instead of ducting outside. A spent filter leaves grease and steam in the kitchen, and a weak vent fan or a failed light gets noticed fast in a small galley.

Island kitchens in Westchase and New Tampa often use a drawer microwave set low in the cabinetry. The motorized drawer can jam or stop partway, and the door switches and control that run it are a common failure point. Do not open the cabinet. A microwave holds a dangerous charge in its high-voltage capacitor even unplugged. Stop using one that sparks, hums without heating or has a damaged door.
