About Viking Microwave Repair
Viking's microwaves are built-ins meant to disappear into a pro-style kitchen. The most common is the microwave drawer, mounted under a counter or wall oven, which glides out on its own at a touch. Viking has also sold built-in and trim-kit convection microwaves for a wall of ovens or a cabinet. Both heat with the usual magnetron, transformer, capacitor and diode, but the drawer adds moving parts.
Those moving parts are where drawer models give trouble. A motor and gear train drive the drawer on rails, and switches tell the control where it is. Drawers that stop partway, grind, or will not move usually have a worn gear or motor, debris in the rails, or a position switch that no longer senses correctly. Pushing or pulling a stuck drawer by hand can strip the gears, so leave it where it stopped.
When a drawer or built-in runs but leaves a cup of water cold, the fault is on the high-voltage side: the magnetron, diode, capacitor or a door interlock switch. Touch controls can stop responding after moisture gets in or after a power surge. Convection models can also lose their heating element or fan, so microwave mode works normally while convection baking does nothing.
Do not remove any cover, because the capacitor can hold a dangerous charge with the power off. You can check the breaker, and with the power off, clean crumbs and spills from the drawer rails and make sure nothing behind the drawer blocks its path. Note whether the drawer stalls at the same point each time; that detail helps narrow down the cause before we arrive.
We discharge the capacitor safely, test the high-voltage parts and interlocks, check the drawer motor, gears, rails and switches, and test convection parts where fitted. We also confirm the unit sits level and secure in its opening. Because these units fit specific openings, repairing a drawer mechanism, interlock or magnetron is usually better than hunting for a replacement that matches the cabinetry.
Where Viking Microwaves Tend to Fail
- Drawer motor or gear train worn, so the drawer won't open
- Debris in the drawer rails stalling it partway
- Magnetron, diode or interlock failure leaving food cold
- Touch panel unresponsive after moisture or a surge
