About Kenmore Range Repair
A Kenmore range is two appliances in one cabinet, and a fault in one half can hide a second fault in the other, so every visit covers the cooktop and the oven. Most were built by Frigidaire and carry a 790 prefix on the tag behind the storage drawer, though other manufacturers supplied some models. Freestanding and slide-in versions exist in gas, coil, smoothtop and induction.
Frigidaire-built gas models wear out bake and surface igniters most. Coil models burn up receptacles and infinite switches. Smoothtops can burn out a radiant element or its switch. Ranges with electronic controls can lose a board or touch panel, and surges during summer thunderstorms are hard on them. Some Kenmore Elite slide-ins added convection fans or a dual-fuel setup, so there is more to test.
A simple test on a coil range: move the dead burner into a socket that works. If it heats there, the original socket or its switch is the problem. Also make sure the breaker has not tripped and, on gas models, that the shutoff behind the range is open. Any gas smell means getting everyone outside first, then calling the gas utility or 911. Share the model number when you book.
On site we test igniters, switches, receptacles, elements, the sensor and the control. If the range has to come out, we protect the floor and counter edge. We also look for the anti-tip bracket, which older installations often skipped. Without it, a child standing on the open door or a heavy pan resting on it can tip a freestanding range forward, so it is worth correcting while we are there.
Common Kenmore range parts follow the original maker's part numbers and are inexpensive, so most repairs are easy to justify. Older ranges run into trouble on the cosmetic and control side, where Kenmore-specific knobs, trim and some boards have been discontinued. If that would leave a repair half-finished, we say so up front and help you decide on replacement.
Where Kenmore Ranges Tend to Fail
- Worn bake igniter and surface spark igniters on Frigidaire-built gas ranges
- Coil receptacle or infinite switch burned out
- Touch panel or control board failing after a power surge
- Discontinued Kenmore knobs, trim or boards on older ranges
