About Maytag Range Repair
An electric Maytag range that loses the oven but keeps two surface elements working is a puzzle until you look behind it. Everything on an electric range is fed through a terminal block at the back from a 240-volt supply split across two legs. If one leg drops, from a breaker half or a connection that has loosened and arced over years of heating and cooling, whatever runs on that leg stops.
Maytag ranges today are Whirlpool-platform freestanding and slide-in models, with the Power Burner on gas tops and Power Preheat in the oven. The brand also kept the double-oven idea from its old Gemini ranges, with a smaller upper cavity above a larger lower one. Each cavity has its own elements or igniter, sensor and door lock, so one can quit while the other cooks normally.
Electronic controls are the other range-wide failure. A control can lose a relay so that one element or one cavity no longer gets power, develop a stuck key that keeps beeping, or freeze after a power blip. Summer storms and outages in Tampa make that last one more common, and often a full breaker reset clears it. If it returns, the board is usually worn rather than damaged by a single event.
Before booking, switch both halves of the range breaker fully off, wait a minute and turn them back on. On gas models, light a burner to confirm gas supply. Make sure a control lock or Sabbath mode is not turned on. Leave a gas range in place rather than moving it. If you slide an electric range out to clean, be sure its back foot goes back under the anti-tip bracket.
We measure voltage at the terminal block, inspect the cord and harness for heat damage, test the control's outputs to each cavity and the cooktop, and then check elements, igniters and sensors individually. Every visit includes a look at the anti-tip bracket. Double-oven and slide-in Maytag ranges are generally worth repairing. A single-oven model with a dead control is a closer call, and we show you both sides.
Where Maytag Ranges Tend to Fail
- Arcing terminal block dropping one leg of the 240-volt supply
- Control relay failed, one cavity or element getting no power
- Upper or lower oven on a double-oven model failing alone
- Stuck touch key or endless beeping from a worn control board
