About Maytag Dryer Repair
If your Maytag dryer squeals, you are hearing one of the most predictable failures in laundry. Current Maytag dryers share Whirlpool's layout: a long belt wraps the drum and loops around an idler pulley that keeps it tight, the motor turns both the belt and the blower wheel, and the back of the drum rides on two rollers. The pulley bearing wears first, starting as a faint chirp and building to a constant whine.
Rollers wear more slowly and make a rhythmic thump or a low rumble as the drum turns. When the belt finally snaps, the motor hums and the drum stays put, often with a sudden drop in noise. These are mechanical parts that age together, so we usually suggest replacing the pulley, belt and rollers at once when they show similar wear, rather than coming back for the next one.
No heat is the other big category. Electric models heat through an element in a housing at the rear, and gas models use an igniter, a flame sensor and a pair of gas valve coils. A thermal fuse or cut-off protects the cabinet and blows when exhaust gets too hot, nearly always because the vent is restricted. On gas units, weak coils let the flame light and then drop out once the dryer warms up.
Owner checks are simple and worth doing. Unplug the dryer, clean the lint screen and vacuum its slot, and check the duct behind the machine for crushed sections. Outside, the vent hood flap should swing open with strong airflow. Laundry in a Tampa garage usually has a short run to the wall, but humid air and lint still collect in the hood, and coastal salt air corrodes metal flaps.
Our technician opens the cabinet to check the pulley, belt and rollers by hand, measures the fuse, thermostats and element or the igniter and coils, and checks airflow at the vent. Maytag dryers are plain machines with few expensive parts, so even an older one is almost always worth fixing. The exception is a pre-2006 Maytag-built design where a needed part is no longer made.
Where Maytag Dryers Tend to Fail
- Idler pulley bearing worn, squeal growing louder each load
- Drum rollers flattened, thumping or rumbling while drying
- Thermal fuse blown after exhaust overheated in a clogged vent
- Gas valve coils weak, flame dropping out once the dryer is warm
