About Perlick Refrigerator Repair
Perlick started in Milwaukee in 1917 building commercial bar equipment, and its residential refrigerators still show that background. Most are under-counter units meant to slide into a cabinet in a bar, island or pantry. They breathe entirely through the grille at the base: a fan pulls room air across the condenser and pushes it back out the front, so the sides and back can sit tight to the cabinetry.
That front-breathing design is why most Perlick calls begin with a warm cabinet. Dust, pet hair and pollen collect on the condenser behind the grille, the compressor runs longer to make up for it, and temperatures creep up. Units on a lanai or in an outdoor kitchen face more of it, plus heat and humidity well beyond indoor conditions, so confirm yours is rated for outdoor use before blaming a part.
Owners can switch the unit off at its switch or breaker, remove the front grille and gently vacuum the condenser fins they can see. Make sure nothing blocks the grille, such as a rug or a toe-kick panel added after installation. Close the door on a strip of paper at several points; easy pull-out means the gasket is no longer sealing. Wait a few minutes before restoring power.
Beyond the condenser, the condenser and evaporator fan motors wear out in that tight space, often getting noisy before they stop. Heavy stainless and glass doors wear their hinges and slides, and flattened gaskets show up as frost or sweating on humid days. Controls and sensors can fail after a surge. Some models are drawers or dual-zone beverage centers with more of each part.
We measure temperatures, test both fans, the sensors and control board, and look for ice that points to a defrost problem. If it still runs warm with good airflow and working fans, we test the sealed system. Since a Perlick is costly and sized to its opening, fan, sensor, gasket and control repairs are almost always worth doing. Sealed-system work on an older unit is a bigger decision.
Where Perlick Refrigerators Tend to Fail
- Condenser behind the front grille clogged with dust and pollen
- Condenser or evaporator fan motor failing in tight cabinetry
- Heavy door wearing hinges and flattening the gasket seal
- Temperature sensor or control board damaged by a power surge
