About Perlick Ice Maker Repair
Water on the floor in front of a Perlick ice maker almost always comes back to the drain. These under-counter machines make and store ice in one cabinet, and every bit of melt and rinse water has to leave, either by gravity to a floor drain or through a drain pump when there is no drain below. When the pump fails or its line clogs, water backs up into the bin and spills.
The ice itself is made by circulating water over a chilled evaporator, building cubes layer by layer until a harvest cycle releases them into the insulated bin. That water path collects scale and biofilm, and local mineral content speeds it up. The results are thin, cloudy or misshapen cubes and slow harvests. Well water in the outer county can also push sediment into the inlet valve screen.
Turn the ice maker off before you check anything. Look for kinks in the drain line, and if your unit has a pump, listen for it running after a harvest. Clean the front grille and condenser, since a clogged condenser makes the machine run hot and produce less, just as on a Perlick refrigerator. Never use a sharp tool to free ice from the evaporator; the plating damages easily.
If cubes are cloudy or thin, the machine probably needs a cleaning cycle with the cleaner Perlick recommends, which the manual walks through step by step. Inlet valves can also stick, either starving the reservoir or overfilling it. A bin sensor or thermostat that fails will keep the machine making ice after the bin is full, which shows up as ice jammed against the door.
We check the inlet, distribution parts, drain pump and lines, the harvest sequence, the bin sensor or thermostat, and the refrigeration side. Heavy scale gets cleaned out, and we suggest a cleaning schedule and possibly a filter. Most repairs are worth it given the unit's cost and cabinetry. Repeated pump failures or fast scaling point to an install or water issue, and we explain how to fix the cause.
Where Perlick Ice Makers Tend to Fail
- Drain pump failed or line clogged, bin overflowing to the floor
- Scale and biofilm on the evaporator making thin, cloudy cubes
- Sticking inlet valve starving or overfilling the reservoir
- Bin sensor failed, ice production not stopping when full
