About Hotpoint Refrigerator Repair
Hotpoint sits at the bottom of the GE Appliances lineup on price, and most of its refrigerators are top-freezer designs sharing GE platforms with fewer features and simpler controls. That makes them common in rentals, starter homes and garages. One evaporator behind the freezer's back panel cools the whole box, and a fan sends part of that cold air down past a damper into the fresh-food section.
Because of that layout, the classic Hotpoint call is a fresh-food side that warms day by day while the freezer above stays frozen. The usual chain of events starts with a failed defrost heater, defrost thermostat or timer, followed by frost thickening until the coil is encased. Once the coil is packed, air stops reaching the lower compartment, and only the freezer keeps working.
Other regulars include an evaporator fan motor that squeals or stops, lint and pet hair matted on the condenser fan, and gaskets that have gone stiff and stopped sealing. A Hotpoint kept in a Tampa garage has it harder: summer heat there can exceed what the unit was designed for, so the compressor runs nearly nonstop and any weak part tends to give up first in July.
Make sure the cold control was not bumped down, check whether the rear wall inside the freezer is frosted, and press the door switch to listen for the fan. Unplug the unit and vacuum the condenser behind the kick plate. On our visit, the defrost heater and thermostat get a continuity test. We also confirm the timer or board actually advances into defrost and check each fan and the relay that starts the compressor.
Defrost parts, fan motors and gaskets are inexpensive, and they are worth replacing on almost any Hotpoint. A compressor failure or refrigerant leak sits on the other side of the line: on a value top-freezer, the sealed-system bill can come close to the price of a new refrigerator, and we will tell you that before you spend anything on it.
Where Hotpoint Refrigerators Tend to Fail
- Defrost heater burned out, letting frost seal off the evaporator
- Open defrost thermostat preventing any defrost cycle
- Evaporator fan squealing or seized behind the freezer panel
- Lint-clogged condenser fan overheating in a hot garage
